DORLING GENEALOGY AND FAMILY HISTORY
NOTICE: I have removed my email link as I have had so much junk mail. My email address is still on each page but uses the words "at" instead of the "@" symbol and "dot" instead of a fullstop.
THE SITE www.dorl.freeserve.co.uk HAS RUN OUT OF SPACE.
A NEW SITE WITH MORE SPACE WILL CONTAIN ALL THE INFORMATION FROM THIS SITE AND MORE AS I AM UPDATING MY DORLING DATABASE WITH INFORMATION FROM THE 1891 AND 1901 UK CENSUS RETURNS.
THE ADDRESS WILL BE: http://dorling-ancestry.mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk
I hope this will be up and running in July 2004.
The Dorling surname originated in Norfolk and Suffolk, England. It can now be found throughout the UK, and elsewhere including Australasia, South Africa and North America.
In 1984 there were approximately 400 Dorlings listed in the UK’s telephone directories. I wrote to them all and received a good response. This, together with Dorling references from civil registration (births, marriages and deaths in the registers at St Catherine’s House from 1837 up to 1930), parish records, census returns, wills and other records, enabled me to put many of the Dorlings I found into family groups.
The aim of this site is to make available my research on Dorling family trees and enable anyone with Dorling ancestry to find their ancestors and relatives. Also, to collect more information from all the Dorlings out there.
Anyone who has Dorling information, memories, photographs, newspaper cuttings etc is invited to email whatever they can so that I can fill in the gaps and also add it to my site to share with others. Please email me via the link at the bottom of each page.
Recently I have discovered it is possible to take a DNA test which can link people related via either the male or female line. www.familytreedna.com offers a simple testing service for $219, or more for their latest test. If enough Dorlings are interested it would be extremely interesting to see if the different Dorling branches are related through a common ancestor. If you are interested in taking part in a Dorling DNA project please email me. Testing can either be done on an individual basis or through a group project coordinated by one person who liases with the testing centre.
I would like to thank all the Dorlings and others who have passed on information, especially Jim Dorling of Needham Market, Suffolk, a distant cousin of mine, who sent me masses of information from his own researching of Dorlings in Suffolk.
Also, to Clive Dorling, who since our contact in February 1999, has done the invaluable job of creating a database of many hundreds of records which enables searching as if in the original records.
And to Sydney Dorling for supplying a lot of Bury St Edmunds information.
And to Terry Hawes for photos of old postcards of Bacton & George bn 1853 Bacton & his family
Please bear in mind that all entries may be subject to error from transcribing, either at source or later. Much of the information here was collected first hand but much was also collected from previously collected material e.g Boyds Marriage Index, IGI, and from records searched by private individuals.
Please let me know if you find errors or if you can add to the information on this site.
I would welcome comments and suggestions about this site, e.g. is it easy to use? Is there anything I could do to improve it?
