Tombstone of Jonathan and Elizabeth Dorling, Dennington Churchyard [provided by Jim Dorling]

The Descendants of John and Margaret Dorling of Dennington, Suffolk 

 1.    John and Margaret Dorling  had 8 children christened in Dennington between 1694 and 1714.  Four of these are known to have died in childhood. Those surviving were Henry bp (baptised) 1695, Nicholas bp 1697, Ann bp 1703, Margaret bp 1708 and William bp 1714.

2. [1]    Nicholas married Sarah Kell in Dennington 1718 and had three children bp there, including Jonathan bp 1718.

3. [2]    Jonathan was buried in Laxfield (1786 age 68), Suffolk where his youngest son William of Epsom erected a headstone to him and his wife Elizabeth, (died 1817 age 83) daughter of John and Maria Thurlow of Stonham Aspall, and their daughter Elizabeth (died 1799 age 22)

4. [3]    William was born in1775 Ipswich (according to the census returns for Epsom 1851). He was a stationer (printer) and moved with his family from Bexhill Sussex to Epsom. He married Lucy Welby.  His son Henry was born in 1806 at Bexhill. His other children were:- Lucy b. 1808, William b. 1810, Jane b. 1812, Mary Ann b. 1814, and Edward b. 1816.

5. [ 4]    Henry became clerk of Epsom race course. He married twice, to Emily Clarke in 1834 and then to Elizabeth Mayson in 1843 at Gretna Green. Elizabeth’s daughter with her first husband Benjamin Mayson was Isabella Mary Mayson who became better known as Mrs Beeton. 9. [5]    Alfred Curtiss 1847 Merchant navy, Lost in Sydney Harbour inrowing boat while still young.

Lucy 1848 married Willy Smiles, daughter married George Spain & had 2 girls one being Nancy Spain

10. [5]    Francis (Frank) 1850 Soldier. Sons Francis =Colonel of the Manchester regiment, Henry Taprell =RN & author, James =Rear Admiral

Eliza 1851

Alice 1853 Died of typhoid while a school girl

Edith Harwell 1854

11. [5]    Walter 1855 Stock-broker in city

Amy 1859 married Col. Oliffe Richmond

12. [5]    Lionel 1860 married Constance Price in Karachi, India 1888. Colonel. Son Lionel Henry Godfrey b. 1890 married Charlotte Elliot, Son Anthony Lionel had family in Essex and Suffolk, now in London
