Bury St Edmunds

Information on Dorlings with Bury St Edmund Connections i.e. lived there or ancestors lived there.

Amelia Dorling, daughter of Alfred and Mary Campion, born 1868 BSE.

Information from Descendants:

"The family story is that Amelia was brought up by her grandmother Mary
Chapman Dorling because her mother Mary Campion who was married very
young to her father Alfred was too flighty - tripped over while wearing
high heels and dropped the baby Amelia downstairs. She had lifelong back
problems as a result. She died in Prospect (near Sydney) in 1941  I
believe (my mother has all the details).

Amelia was placed as a ladies maid to the Duchess of Bedford. She had an
illegitimate child May Dorling in 1892. May (my greataunt who died in
Sydney in 1988) was also brought up in Bury St Edmunds by her
great grandmother Mary Chapman Dorling and my mother has a photo of May
as a baby with her ggm. Meanwhile Amelia moved to London, where she
married Albert Robert Gardner in 1898 or so. They emigrated to Australia
in 1913 with May and their daughter my grandmother Anne Margaret Philip
Gardner (b. 1903, known as Dolly). She died in 1998 aged 95. She married
Zephaniah Thomas in 1932. My mother Olwyn Thomas Barwick (b. 1933) is
her only surviving child."
