Amelia was placed as a ladies maid to the Duchess of Bedford. She had an illegitimate child May Dorling in 1892. May (my greataunt who died in Sydney in 1988) was also brought up in Bury St Edmunds by her great grandmother Mary Chapman Dorling and my mother has a photo of May as a baby with her ggm. Meanwhile Amelia moved to London, where she married Albert Robert Gardner in 1898 or so. They emigrated to Australia in 1913 with May and their daughter my grandmother Anne Margaret Philip Gardner (b. 1903, known as Dolly). She died in 1998 aged 95. She married Zephaniah Thomas in 1932. My mother Olwyn Thomas Barwick (b. 1933) is her only surviving child." |
