Information from
Sue Dorling about her descendants from Great Grandfather James (1833) and
Grandfather William Dorling (1877 Wangford), sent to me in 1984.
"We come from East Anglian stock and as you can see the earliest member we
can prove was James Dorling (1833 Hockwood-cum-wilton) my Great
Grandfather, but I have no date of birth or place of birth. When my
Grandfather was born in 1877 they were living at Wangford Warren and his
profession was Warrener on the Guiness Estates - at Elveden Estate as it became
under Lord Iveagh. His wife, Rebecca, (nee Ayres) was apparently a hefty
women and I recall tales told by my father of the way she tossed 14 stone flour
sacks into the bin when bread making, as if they were full of feathers.
William
Dorling born 1877, was my paternal Grandfather and he again was employed on
the Elveden Estate as Warrener and later Gamekeeper (probably only assistant
Gamekeeper because I'm sure there were a great many of them on an estate of that
size). He married Jessie Norton, but I can't say where or when at this
moment, and this union produced two children, Gerald Norton Dorling and Winifred
(?) Dorling. Jesse died in 1922 or 1912 and William then married Edith
Chapple of Bath and they had a daughter Gwendoling....
In
1816 William left Suffolk and came down to Oxfordshire to seek a better living,
as the first world war had made his typw of work superfluous in as much as the
gentry were feeling the pinch and were making economies. Initially he took
work felling trees in the Stoke Row area, but from then on he led a very varied
career (including that of a publican) until he finally settled in Aston tirrold
as a farm labourer. Edith died there in 1947 (?) and is buried in the
cemetary in Aston Tirrold. William afterwards went to live in the Alnutt
Bequest Almshouses at Goring Heath where my father and mother kept an eye on
him. He died in 1951 and is buried at Woodcote.
My
father - Gerald - also led a very chequered career. We know that for
some time he was mate on ateam wagon hauling pit-props into Wales and also at
one stage on ploughing engines. At the time of his marriage to Winifred
May Josey of Reading he was listed as labourer on a poultry farm; on my elder
brother's birth certificate a painter, whilst on my own he is simply
labourer! My own memories of him were as a general dogsbody on the local
water company. he died in 1977.
Winifred,
his sister, married Tim Smith a Farm Labourer, and they had one daughter
Amy. We have very little information on her because she and Gerald found
it very difficult to be civil to each other! A not uncommon trait in the
Dorling family! Gwen, his step-sister, is the only surviving memner of
that family and a lot of this information has been gleaned from her."
